During the 1960s the Netherlands had a shortage of education for prospective doctors and therefore a new medical faculty had to be established. Maastricht opted to open a new university and made a bid. However, the academic world expected more from a university than just a number of extra training places. Therefore, a new system of education has to be initiated: Problem Based Learning. This way, medical research would not only be clinical, but would make a contribution to the knowledge for general practice and other primary medical functions. In 1975 everything was organised and the university opened its doors in January 1976. From that day on the university developed its education and many programmes in several disciplines are taught. Nowadays, Maastricht University is one of the most international universities of the Netherlands.
Level of Education
Ever since the founding of Maastricht University, the institution is using Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This way of learning is about exchanging knowledge in an effective and challenging way. The education is unique while it is Europe-focused and internally oriented. The university offer a broad range of bachelor and master programmes preparing students for an academic career. Maastricht University is a research university, which means that education is focused on both academic insights and preparation for the labour market. The education is of a very high quality and when you have finished your education you will be awarded a bachelor, master or PhD degree.
Scholarships
Maastricht University offers several scholarships to international students. If you’d like to get some more information about these opportunities or want to know how to apply, have a look at this website.
International student programmes
The city of Maastricht has its own Erasmus Student Network. This is an organisation looking after international students. The network organises parties, events and excursions. It is a good way to meet new people, discover the city and find your way around the campus. Furthermore, the network will help you with practical problems.
