Of course your time abroad is not only about studying, partying and getting good grades. When you are abroad you would probably love to do more. That’s why this section of the website tries to give you some insight in all the fun things you can do in the Netherlands.
Ok, let’s be honest. If you think of Holland there are a few things that come to mind: windmills, wooden shoes and tulips. However, these things are probably not visible in the city where you study (unless you study in Amsterdam where the tourist market provides all kinds of typical Dutch products). Do you want to see the real stuff? You can consider to visit a touristic place such as Volendam or visit the countryside on your own.
Visit the countryside
When you are to visit the countryside on your own, the first thing you need to make sure is you have transportation. Whether it is a typical Dutch bike or a car, you need something to get you outside the city. Got transportation? Then just go for a ride. Check a map (or Google maps) and look for a bit of green outside the city. Most of the time the green spots on the map are typical Dutch sceneries with cows on flat meadows. So, just try it and go there!
Typical Dutch villages
Some villages in the Netherlands are more pretty than all the others. The Dutch call them fortified cities due to their history. The cities are known for their beauty but also for their good food and lovely places to have a walk. Curious? Go check out one of the following cities:
- Zaltbommel (Gelderland)
- Bergen op Zoom
- Ravenstein / Megen
A Typical Themepark
The Netherlands has a few theme parks, but there is one which is quite unique. If you love fairy tales you should definitely visit this park. The Efteling is the most famous Dutch theme park and all attractions are based on fairy tales. However, this does not mean it is a dull theme park. It has everything a normal theme park has to offer, but all with a special twist which makes it an absolute must do when you study in the Netherlands.
The famous Dutch painters
Another thing the Dutch are known for are their painters. Perhaps you have heard from Vincent van Gogh or Rembrandt van Rijn? If you’d like to see some of their famous paintings you should definitely visit several museums.
Use the water for fun
If there is one thing the Netherlands is known for, it is the water. When you go to the Netherlands it is probably weird to think about it, but you are living below the normal sea level. For Dutchies this is quite normal and to manage the water the Netherlands is full of canals, lakes and rivers. Do like the Dutch do and use these waters to have some fun: go sailing, swimming or ice skating. If you don’t want to do it yourself you can always enjoy it from a distance by visiting a professional ice skating competition or the Sail weekend where many beautiful sailing boats enter Amsterdam.
Seal care centre
Want to do something special during your stay? Be sure to visit the seal care centre in Pieterburen (a 30 minute drive from Groningen). This centre is was established to help sick and injured seals rehabilitate, but has evolved into a scientific-based research centre and hospital. And you can visit this centre every day of the week! This your chance to watch the rehabilitation of the seals from close by.
Relaxing at the Wadden Sea
Looking for a beautiful place in a typical Dutch surrounding? There is one place in the Netherlands where you can enjoy a scenery which can be found nowhere else in the world. The Netherlands is home to one of the world heritages: the Wadden Sea. It is famous for its rich flora and it is a perfect place to relax when your student life proves to be a bit stressful. There are five Dutch islands which are all perfect for relaxing.
