The NHL Hogeschool is a university of applied sciences (or as the NHL calls it: professional education) located in the north of the Netherlands. The university has about 10.000 students divided among two colleges; one in Leeuwarden and one in Groningen. The NHL is the second largest university of applied sciences in the Northern region of the Netherlands. Its main location is in Leeuwarden, a city rich in history and the capital of the province of Friesland. NHL was founded when thirteen institutes of higher education merged. The oldest of these institution was founded in 1875.
Level of Education
The NHL is a university of applied sciences. It is an institution where you can study for specific professions and it is focused on competences instead of research. The specific focus at NHL is on the student’s professionalism. The university cooperates with several companies and government institutions which provide students with real work assignments. Through this cooperation the university wants to make sure its education is practice-based and relevant to the current labour market.
Scholarships
The NHL does not offer any scholarships to international students. Nevertheless, the website of NHL mentions that international students may be eligible to receive a grant for the extra costs involved in studying abroad. You can contact the NHL international office for more information.
International student programmes
In both Groningen and Leeuwarden there are no international student programs from the NHL university of applied sciences, but there is no need to be disappointed: both cities have an Erasmus Student Network (ESN) which will support you during your studies. The network offers help, guidance and activities for international students. The organisation tries to give you the best time of your life and to make you feel at home as soon as possible.
The Erasmus Student Networks organizes an introduction week for international students twice a year in both cities. This way, you’ll get to know other international students and Dutch students. It is the best way to find your way around in the city and at your university. After the introduction week the network organizes many events such as parties, trips and dinners.
